Vision & Eyesight – Not Quite the Same
Why do some cameras take better pictures than others? You know, how at
family parties everyone takes the identical group picture and no two look
quite the same? Some aren’t as sharp, some not as bright, some lack
vivid color, some seem further away.
Each
camera’s lens, flash, shutter, and other components are all in perfect
working order. It’s just how they work together to interpret the
image that affects final picture quality. Similarly, many people can have
20/20 eyesight but see the world very differently.
Eyesight is only a measure of the eyes’ innate response to incoming
light, tested by reading a chart at 20 feet. Vision, however, is the interpretation
of that light and how it integrates with all of the eyes’ components
and the conscious mind.
How Eyes Work – Photographers of Everyday Life
Your
eyes take millions of daily snapshots and send them to your brain for
processing. Very simplified, here’s how they capture life:
- Light reflects off objects back to your eyes (the camera lens).
- Pupils opening and closing regulate the amount of light let in (aperture
and shutter speed).
- Millions of nerve cells create electrical impulses sent to the brain
(image recorded on film).
- The brain interprets these messages from the eyes into the “picture”
you see.
How your brain interprets these images guides you in just about everything
you do.
Seeing is Believing
Since vision is your dominant sense—accounting for approximatly
90% of all the information you take in—what you see becomes your
conscious reality. By doing eye exercises, you optimize your visual skills
which have a direct and significant impact on your ability to learn,
work, play and perform.
When You Can’t Believe Your Eyes
As in photography, the equipment quality, condition, and functionality
directly affect how accurately an image is captured and interpreted.
When your visual skills are not functioning optimally—you start
to lose focus. You’re no longer able to believe your
eyes because they’re not accurately reflecting what’s in front
of you.
